Another chapter of random stuff, starting with an explicit tribute to Azumanga Daioh.

So in the Clerks cartoon one of the interesting thing in the extras was that they talked about how they were struggling to figure out a cartoon design for Jay, and they realized that if you stop and look he actually has really round, babyish features. Mike meanwhile is a huge comedian and such, which would make you think a cartoon character based on him should have wide-open, goofy eyes, but his eyes actually look a little squinty, and naturally I did a comic playing on that.

This was one of the very first things I decided to put into a comic. I still have no idea why.

So in Japanese the kanji for “dog” is 犬, which can variously be read “inu” or “ken” depending on the type of word it’s being used in. The Japanese also had a certain fascination with the afro hairstyle, which resulted in among other things the “Afro Ken” toys being a thing.
