Ignition Episode #7: Beachside Ghost Story By Ewen "Blackbird" Cluney FADE IN: EXT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY AYAKO, wearing her school uniform, walks down a hallway at school. She blinks when she sees someone and starts running. She skids to a halt in front of KYOKO. AYAKO Sempai! KYOKO Ayako-chan! A-are you alright? Ayako fumbles with her bag and pulls out a wrapped rectangular present. She bows and holds it out to Kyoko. KYOKO (CONT'D) Wh-what's this? AYAKO It's to thank you for everything you've done for me! *Please* accept it! Kyoko reluctantly takes the present. Ayako straightens and watches expectantly as Kyoko slowly opens it. She pulls out a light purple scarf. For a moment Kyoko looks sad, but then she turns to Ayako and smiles. KYOKO Thank you. It'll go great with that sweater I have. AYAKO A-are you sure? KYOKO I'm sure. AYAKO O-okay... INT. KENJI'S BEDROOM - MORNING KENJI sits up in bed. The alarm clock starts ringing and he wearily picks it up and hurls it against a wall. KENJI Don't even start with me. INT. KITCHEN - DAY Kenji walks into the kitchen. Everyone is there, and DREAMY immediately walks up to him, then halts, blushing furiously. KENJI ...? DREAMY K-k-ke-ke- KENJI ...? DREAMY K-kenji-sempai... KENJI "Sempai"? KIMIKO I tried to tell her that putting in that dating sim game was a bad idea. DREAMY (blushing) Well... I... um... uh... KENJI ... DREAMY (gradually turning redder and redder) Um... I... KIMIKO You aren't very good at those games, are you? DREAMY K-ken-- KENJI What? DREAMY N-never mind! Dreamy runs out of the room. KENJI (sigh) What else could happen today? KYOSUKE Isn't Civiko supposed to come out of the shop today? KENJI (twitch) Yeah. It could have been a week sooner if not for you. KYOSUKE Don't tell me you miss her? KENJI (twitch) I have to go to work. INT. SIDE ROOM AT HIGH SCHOOL - DAY Cut to Ayako walking into a side room; in it there are about eight other CLUB MEMBERS. The room is unusual in that there is a red pentagram inscribed on the floor, and the rest of it is decorated with skulls, black candles, occult tomes, and other such things. There is also a banner that says "Black Magic Club." CLUB MEMBER #1 There you are! There was a call for you from the hospital. AYAKO Wh-what? CLUB MEMBER #1 Some guy got hospitalized a couple days ago and when he came around he insisted he had to call you about it. AYAKO (under her breath) That idiot... CLUB MEMBER #1 Huh? AYAKO What was his name? CLUB MEMBER #1 Some Western name... Richmont I think? AYAKO Ah. Then it's not important. CLUB MEMBER #1 Are you sure? They said he broke both his legs... AYAKO I'm sure. CLUB MEMBER #2 I know we're here to practice the Black Arts and delve into Things Man Was Not Meant To Know and all that... but that's kinda messed up... AYAKO If you met him you'd understand. CLUB MEMBER #1 ANYway, it's time to call this meeting to order. EXT - FRONT OF KENJI'S HOUSE - DAY Cut to Kenji edging out of the front door with a package under his arm. PINKY suddenly falls into step alongside him. KENJI What do _you_ want? PINKY Huh? KENJI Why are you following me? PINKY I dunno. KENJI (sigh) Should've known. PINKY I think I just like being around you. (smiles) KENJI Why's that? PINKY Ummm... Dunno. KENJI (rolls eyes) You don't even know? PINKY Nope! I'm an idiot, remember? (smiles) KENJI How could I forget? PINKY Dunno. (smiles) KENJI But... Why? All I ever do is make sarcastic comments. PINKY Ummmmmmmmmmmm... Oh! KENJI What? PINKY My socks are mismatched... KENJI And? PINKY And I just feel good when I'm around you. (smiles) KENJI ... Whatever. Kenji continues walking in silence. Flash-cut to a YOUNGER KENJI, wearing a school uniform and sitting next to an unidentified GIRL. YOUNG KENJI I dunno... I guess I just feel good when I'm around you... Flash-cut back to Kenji and Pinky walking along. KENJI Great. But I need to you stay home today. PINKY Aww... Okay. KENJI ... I'm gonna have to take you back there, aren't I? PINKY I dunno. Kenji lets out a long sigh. CROSS-DISSOLVE TO: EXT. OUTSIDE EXTREME CD VISION - DAY Kenji is leaving the store. EXT - OUTSIDE AN AUTO SHOP - DAY Cut to Kenji walking towards the auto shop; MIMI runs up alongside him. MIMI There you are! KENJI ...? MIMI Have you decided yet? KENJI Hm? MIMI About tomorrow -- the trip to the beach. KENJI ... (shrug) MIMI (sarcastic) Oh, *that's* helpful. KENJI Some people I know are going to want to come along. MIMI What, those girls who were tagging along yesterday? Kenji reaches the door to auto shop and is about to knock when he sees CIVIKO running straight at him at high speed. Kenji calmly steps back, pulling Mimi back with him, and Civiko skids to a halt in front of Kenji. She looks up at Kenji and grins ear to ear. CIVIKO Kenji-sama! I missed you SO much! Civiko throws her arms around Kenji, who rolls his eyes. Mimi watches in shock. Civiko notices Mimi and stops short, frowning. CIVIKO (CONT'D) Kenji-sama, who's she? MIMI I'm Mimi. Kenji rolls his eyes and holds out the package from before to Civiko. CIVIKO (totally caught off-guard) Huh? F-for me? Kenji nods. Civiko reluctantly opens the package to reveal the leather jacket from before. Her eyes sparkle when she sees it, and she immediate puts it on. CIVIKO (CONT'D) K-kenji-sama! Thank you so much! Kenji looks away and shrugs. Civiko takes the opportunity to stick her tongue out at Mimi while he isn't looking. Mimi fumes. MIMI So. Do you want to go to the beach? CIVIKO (blink) Th-the beach? Kenji looks at Civiko and Mimi thoughtfully for a moment, and then shrugs. KENJI Why not? CUT TO: EXT - HIGH SCHOOL - DAY Kyoko is sitting by herself on a bench at school. She seems sad, and is looking at the scarf that Ayako gave her. Ayako watches from a distance. AYAKO Why? Why does sempai look so sad? If I find out who's responsible... they'll *pay*! INT. INSIDE THE CIVIC - DAY Kenji is driving down the highway, with Nokia sitting next to him and Pinky and Dreamy in the back seat. NOKIA Um... Kenji-sama, I was just wondering; what were you doing this morning? CAR (nervous honk) KENJI ... DISSOLVE TO: EXT. DRIVEWAY - MORNING Kenji and Civiko creep along. KYOSUKE (O.S.) Good morning to you all! NEIGHBOR (O.S.) (very angry) I told you to shut the hell up, you freak! Kenji glances up at the house's balcony where Kyosuke is standing, and starts hurrying. KYOSUKE Hey there little bro! What are you and Civiko-chan doing on this fine morning? KENJI (quitely, to Civiko) Let's hurry, before-- NOKIA (walking up to Kyosuke on the balcony) Good morning! What's going on? KENJI Crap. NOKIA Good morning Kenji-sama! Morning Civiko! What're you two doing up so early? CIVIKO We're going to the beach! Wanna come? PINKY What's the beach? Is it good to eat? NOKIA Sure! That sounds like a lot of fun! Kenji sighs and lowers his head in defeat. DISSOLVE TO: INT. INSIDE THE CIVIC - DAY KENJI I had an errand to run. NOKIA Oh. Okay. PINKY So... where does all the sand come from? DREAMY I'm... not sure. But I know the beach is a very pleasant and romantic place to go. PINKY Neat! EXT. HOSPITAL ENTRANCE RICHMOND hobbles out of the hospital; one of his legs is in a cast and he's using a crutch to support himself. He looks very irritated and winces a little with each step. RICHMOND They'll pay for this. EXT. BEACH PARKING LOT - AFTERNOON The Civic is parked in a parking lot by the beach, with Kyosuke's beat up old car next to it. Kenji wearily gets out of his car and blinks in the hazy light of the early afternoon. While Pinky, Dreamy, and Nokia are getting out of the Civic, Kyosuke, Kimiko, and TOASTY are getting out of Kyosuke's car. KENJI This should be the place. Kenji casually points the remote at the Civic, and pretends nothing is happening as it metamorphoses into Civiko. KIMIKO Are you sure that's really a good idea? KENJI (shrug) No one notices things that don't fit into how they thing the world should be. KIMIKO Pft. Then you must be blind. Kenji glares at Kimiko for a moment before he realizes that Mimi and an six other COLLEGE STUDENTS are approaching. MIMI There you guys are! KANEDA and ITSUKI, two average college guys, look at the assembled girls in awe. The pause for a moment to exchange glances. KANEDA I can't believe it! ITSUKI We're in heaven! MIMI (clears throat loudly) I think some introductions are in order. (motioning to each in turn) We've got Ikumi, Kaneda, Itsuki, Tomoe, Nobuyuki, and of course Beniko. KYOSUKE Please... Allow me to do the introductions for our little group! (flourishing) I am none other then Kyosuke Asakawa; before you are my younger brother Kenji and my little sister Kimiko. Joining us are our dear friends, the adorable Civiko, the lovely Nokia, the exquisite Toasty, the unique Pinky, and the beautiful Dreamy! TOMOE Those are some... interesting names. KYOSUKE (laughs) Yes, well... I *was* named after my dear departed grandfather, and Kenji was named after a character in a novel! ITSUKI (under his breath) Who the hell is this guy? MIMI (clears her throat) Anyway, come on! EXT. BEACH A short while later, the college students have started a beach volleyball game and Toasty, Kimiko, Kyosuke, Nokia, and Civiko have all joined in. Pinky and Dreamy are trying to build a sand castle, and Kenji is sitting by himself, watching the waves. Everyone has switched to swimwear. Mimi sits down next to Kenji; she's holding two cans of soda, and hands one to Kenji. MIMI Do you always like to mope around when everyone else is having fun? KENJI Do you always like to bother me when I finally get a little peace and quiet? MIMI (rolls eyes) Must be pretty lively around your place. KENJI (opening the soda) Don't remind me. MIMI I've been hearing some pretty weird things y'know. KENJI Whatever you've heard, it's probably not as strange as the truth. Mimi takes a sip of her soda before laying back on her beach towel. She turns her head to face Kenji and grins. MIMI Oh really? KENJI (sigh) Really. I went to Sakurai High so it takes a lot to surprise me. MIMI I've heard about that place... So the rumors are true? KENJI And then some. And I almost got through the summer without anything weird happening. MIMI And then? KENJI (pointing at the girls named) That's my car, my toaster, my cell phone, my DreamStation-X, and an eraser. MIMI Wha...? KENJI Don't even think of asking me how or why. MIMI (smiles) They seem happy. Kenji shrugs and opens his soda. Mimi stands up; she takes off her glasses and puts them into a case which she carefully puts down. She then undoes her braid. With her sparkling eyes visible and her long, flowing hair she suddenly looks very beautiful. She smiles and takes Kenji's hand. MIMI (CONT'D) Come on; you're not leaving here without getting a little wet. Kenji scowls but lets himself be dragged to the edge of the water. He looks up at her as she smiles, up to her knees in sea water. Kenji gives her a flat look, and is hit in the face by a splash of sea water. KENJI I hope you're having fun. Dreamy suddenly walks up to Kenji, looking concerned. DREAMY K-kenji-sempai? I-I think there's something you should see... A short while later, Kenji, Mimi, and Dreamy are looking at a sand castle which has two human feet sticking up out of the sand next to it. Kenji gives Dreamy a flat look. DREAMY (CONT'D) (shrug) I don't know how she did it! KENJI (sighs; to Mimi) Take a foot. INT. EXTREME CD VISION Richmond enters the store; NAOKI turns from what he's doing and gives Richmond a flat look. NAOKI Irrashaimase. RICHMOND Where is he? NAOKI Who? RICHMOND Kenji. Asakawa Kenji. NAOKI And... why should I tell you? RICHMOND (trying to look fearsome) Because...! Er... NAOKI (sigh) He went to the beach. And of course I was invited to go, but I couldn't get out of working today since Kenji already had the day off, so I'm stuck in this little hole in the wall while everyone else is off having fun! RICHMOND (starting to leave) Thank you! I-- NAOKI I'm not finished venting! As if that weren't enough that cousin of his and who knows how many other cute girls are going to be there! AAARGH! RICHMOND Well-- NAOKI It just pisses me off! That guy keeps saying he doesn't want to have anything to do with girls, and then he has tons of them hanging off of him anyway! RICHMOND Um... NAOKI Makes me wish I was old enough to drink! EXT. BEACH - LATE AFTERNOON It's around 4 p.m.; Kenji watches from his towel as Civiko, Pinky, Dreamy, and Tomoe work on building a larger sand castle. Civiko glances at Kenji now and then, and finally gets up and approaches him. CIVIKO A-are you okay? KENJI Fine. CIVIKO Okay... Are you hungry? KENJI A little. CIVIKO (nervously) Well... I was... kind of... wondering if you wanted to go to the little stand over there before they close...? Kenji regards her for a long moment, then shrugs and starts getting up. Cut to Mimi watching them go from where she's playing frisbee. She catches the frisbee and then walks up Ikumi. MIMI (whispering) Okay... I think it's about time to put our plan in motion. IKUMI Are you really sure about this Mimi? MIMI (grinning) Of course. INT. BEACHSIDE NOODLE SHOP Kenji and Civiko sit on opposite sides of a small table, each with a plate of fried noodles and a drink. There is a long, uncomfortable silence between them. CIVIKO ... Kenji? KENJI Hm? CIVIKO Can... I ask you something? KENJI (shrugs) Yeah. CIVIKO It's just that... well... everyone else seems to be having fun here except you... Kenji pauses for a long moment and sighs, looking into his plate. He takes a sip of his drink and looks up at Civiko again. KENJI I'm not sure you'd understand. CIVIKO Well... well... I want to! KENJI (sigh) Well... um... Imagine if... someone told you they loved you more than anything else in the world. CIVIKO That... (blushes) That would make me feel really good... KENJI And after almost a year of feeling really good you found out that it was all a lie and they actually loved someone else more and didn't tell you. CIVIKO (shocked) Huh? B-but... KENJI If that happened... how would you feel if you went somewhere where you went to have fun with that special person about a dozen times? CIVIKO (saddened) I... I'm sorry... I didn't know. KENJI (shrugs) It's not like I like to talk about it. Why would you know? CIVIKO But then... why did you come here at all? KENJI I... guess I didn't expect to be hit so badly by old memories. EXT. BEACH PARKING LOT Richmond, looking exhausted and angry, steps off of a bus, looking around irately. EXT. BEACH The sun is setting, and Kenji and Civiko come back to find the rest of the group around a campfire. MIMI There you are! C'mon and join us! DREAMY An expedition has been planned. Into the dark caves beyond the next hill. Danger lies there-- KENJI Lemme guess... KIMIKO Some horror game. MIMI We're just gonna go explore the caves is all. KENJI We? MIMI (disappointed) You... don't wanna come? KENJI No. The only thing that happens in places like that is stupidity. MIMI And how would you know? KENJI Experience. MIMI Hm. Well, we're all going; you can watch the campfire by yourself then. CIVIKO I'll stay with you. NOKIA And so will I. TOASTY Do... do you think you'll need any toast while you're waiting? KENJI ... Not really. TOASTY Oh. Then I'll go if it's okay with you. KENJI Whatever. INT. HOSPITAL RECEPTION DESK Ayako stands before the desk, while the RECEPTIONIST is looking at her computer. AYAKO Well? RECEPTIONIST According to this he was released at 2 p.m., with his leg in a cast. AYAKO Typical. I don't suppose you'd know where he was going? RECEPTIONIST Um... I'm afraid not. He was released early because he had no insurance of identification of any kind. Ayako sighs and starts walking away. AYAKO (muttering) That _idiot_. EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE NEAR BEACH The assembled party stands before the entrance to the cave with some trepidation. About half of them have flashlights. TOASTY It sure is dark in there... KYOSUKE Fear not! For I, Asakawa Kyosuke, will be at your side! KIMIKO And... what would you do if you actually saw a ghost? KYOSUKE I'd... I'd stand before whatever dark spectre stood in my way and demand that it harry us no more. KIMIKO Bzzt! Wrong! You'd run like a little girl 'cause you're actually terrified of spooky stuff. ITSUKI Really? KIMIKO He's my brother. I know these things. EXT. BEACH Kenji, Civiko, and Nokia sit around the campfire. Civiko sits next to Kenji, looking concerned but afraid to do anything. Suddenly a SCREAM can be heard in the distance. Civiko and Nokia are startled, but Kenji is unmoved. CIVIKO Wh-what was that?! NOKIA Could it be that the Maiden of the Caves that Mimi told us about is real? KENJI (sigh) No... that sounded like Kyosuke screaming. INT. CAVES In a section of the cave lit by a flashlight on the floor, Toasty finds Kyosuke has jumped into her arms; he's hyperventilating and his eyes dart around in search of danger (imagined or otherwise). TOASTY A-are you alright, Kyosuke-san? KYOSUKE I... I... um... there's a--! TOASTY Y-you dropped your flashlight. KYOSUKE (starting to calm down) Oh... Toasty slowly lowers him to the ground. He picks up the flashlight and takes a few deep breaths. And then suddenly a murmuring can be heard from somewhere deeper in the caves. EXT. BEACH Another SCREAM is heard in the distance. KENJI That's Kyosuke. In that kind of atmosphere he'll be afraid of his own shadow. Another scream can be heard. INT. CAVES Kyosuke is clinging to Toasty again. KYOSUKE I-I saw it! A giant creature made of pure darkness! TOASTY A-are you sure that wasn't your shadow? KYOSUKE (embarrassed) Er... ehehehe... You might be right. INT. ANOTHER PART OF THE CAVES Istuki and Dreamy walk along (Dreamy is holding a flashlight); Itsuki seems elated to have such an attractive girl along -- except for the way she seems to have a dark, depressed aura around her at the moment. ITSUKI You sure are cute-- DREAMY I'm hoping we'll all make it out alive... But I don't think we all will. ITSUKI Oh, I'm sure we'll all be-- Dreamy suddenly hands him the flashlight. DREAMY A flashlight. It might be handy if you, the master of lighting, take it with you. ITSUKI (confused, taking the flashlight) Wha...? INT. FURTHER IN THE CAVES Kaneda walks with Pinky. KANEDA So... where are you from? PINKY Kenji's house. KANEDA (sweat drop) I... I mean before that. PINKY Before that I think we were in this office. KANEDA Um... PINKY And before that... I don't remember. (cute silly sticks tongue out) KANEDA Oh... PINKY Sorry I can't help it 'cuz I'm an idiot. KANEDA Well that's really-- What did you say? INT. ELSEWHERE IN THE CAVES Kimiko is walking with Nobuyuki. NOBUYUKI So... how old are you? KIMIKO Fifteen. NOBUYUKI (muttering) Damn... just a kid. Kimiko pops a vein and pounds him in the head. KIMIKO You have no idea how much I hate it when people say things like that. NOBUYUKI I'm starting to understand... EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE NEAR BEACH Richmond approaches the cave entrance. RICHMOND This must be it... I can *definitely* hear voices in there. Just wait; I'll find you and your Valkyrie Stone. INT. CAVES Toasty and Kyosuke are proceeding further and further into the caves. Kyosuke is a nervous wreck. KYOSUKE Perhaps... a strategic retreat is in order at this point. TOASTY (smiles) We'll be fine. CLOSE on Kyosuke as he continues walking. He stops and blinks, and realizes that Toasty is no longer with him. He looks at his flashlight nervously, and realizes that it's glow is fading. As it becomes darker and darker his eyes get wider and wider. EXT. BEACH Kenji glances in the direction of the caves as yet another scream is heard. KENJI Jeez... I didn't realize he was that much of a coward. CIVIKO I... I thought that sounded like a girl. KENJI Now you see the problem. INT. CAVES Pink is walking through the caves. PINKY So... are chartered accountants good to eat? Pinky stops and looks around. PINKY (CONT'D) Hey, where'd you go? Suddenly a luminous, SPECTRAL FIGURE looms up behind her with white mist spilling off around it. PINKY (CONT'D) Huh? What's this? SPECTRAL FIGURE You're supposed to be scared and scream. PINKY Oh. Okay. EXT. BEACH A more girlish scream is heard. KENJI That, however, was someone else. NOKIA A-are you sure we shouldn't go and check up on them? KENJI I'm sure. CIVIKO How do you know? They could be in trouble? Kenji is silent. INT. CAVES Kimiko finds Kaneda clinging to her as they see the spectral figure from before looming towards them. KIMIKO (sighs) Pathetic. KANEDA Don't hurt me! EXT. BEACH Nokia suddenly starts singing. Kenji answers as usual, with her thumb and pinky forming a telephone receiver. KENJI Hello? KIMIKO (heard on the phone) Hur-- oniisan! We --ed y-- help! There's terri-- dange--ere! KENJI Hello? Hello? As Kenji hangs up another girl's scream can be heard. NOKIA I'm sorry but the signal was lost. KENJI It's okay. CIVIKO B-but... KENJI It's _fine_. INT. CAVES Dreamy and Itsuki are walking through the caves still. DREAMY How could anyone DO this? ITSUKI Do what? DREAMY I tried to tell them not to go but they went anyway. ITSUKI What're you--? Suddenly the spectral figure looms up before them. Itsuki screams, but Dreamy just stares flatly. The figure looms and moans and waves its arms in an effort to appear more menacing; Itsuki is getting more and more terrified; Itsuki keeps getting more and more scared but Dreamy seems nonplussed. Finally, the figure reaches up and removes its head -- actually a rubber mask -- and Mimi pokes her head out. MIMI Jeez, doesn't anything scare you?! ITSUKI M-Mimi?! It was you all along?! MIMI Well, duh! DREAMY The monster was not real. We all are sav ed. MIMI Huh? ITSUKI Don't ask me! She's been like that for a while now... MIMI Well... this was a waste. Let's go. EXT. BEACH - NIGHT Kenji is lying on his towel by the fire, looking up at the stars. Civiko hesitates for a moment and then lies down next to him. He deliberately ignores him, but she doesn't seem to mind. CIVIKO I... I had a lot of fun today. (2 beats) And... I guess you didn't so I wanted to say thank you for putting up with all of this. KENJI (shrugs) You're welcome. A moment later, the "expedition" returns, Mimi still in her monster costume (sans mask) and Ikumi lugging a bucket of dry ice. Kyosuke curls into a ball by the fire and trembles. Toasty sighs and sits down next to him, resting a hand on his head. TOASTY Poor Kyosuke... MIMI Well... that didn't quite work out according to plan... KENJI Oh really? MIMI Hey, why didn't you come? KENJI Experience. MIMI But... I mean, your friends could've been in danger! KENJI (rolls eyes, sitting up) You're not giving me much credit. IKUMI What d'you mean? Kenji slowly stands, casting an irate glare across the new arrivals. KENJI (voice rising from murmur to shouting as he speaks) I went to Sakurai High. I've been in situations like you attempted to create THREE DAMN TIMES! MIMI B-but... KENJI You might think it's funny, but I don't have much tolerance for people trying to make me think that people I care about are in trouble just to satisfy some sadistic need for a laugh! Mimi is taken aback and is trying to form an apology. KENJI (CONT'D) I was _hoping_ I might be able to trust you as a friend, but I can see that that might not be a good idea. MIMI Kenji... I-- KENJI (interrupting) What? It'd better be good. NOBUYUKI Dude! Where do you get off going off at her like that?! She just wanted to have some fun and you blow up for no reas-- KENJI DON'T. Like I said I've been though it all before -- nothing you say will make me change my mind. MIMI Kenji, I'm sorry... I didn't know you felt this way... Kenji looks at her for a long moment, then lets out a long sigh. KENJI Apology accepted. FADE TO BLACK. INT. INSIDE THE CIVIC Kenji is driving, with Dreamy, Nokia, and Pinky in the car as before. NOKIA Are... are you sure you weren't too harsh? DREAMY She only wanted to have some fun, Kenji sempai. KENJI (sigh; beat) Maybe, but I had to make it clear that I wouldn't put up with that kind of thing, or else she'd try it again. NOKIA She apologized at least. KENJI Yeah... that's something that never happened in those situations before. Everyone always acted like I was wrong to be mad because they'd tried to deceive me and make me sick with worry. DREAMY So... so you're going to give her another chance? KENJI Yeah. NOKIA Good. I can tell -- her heart was in the right place. FADE TO BLACK. INT. CAVES Richmond looks around desperately and lets out a long, futile sigh. RICHMOND DAMN IT! SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE!
