Ignition Episode #12: She Fights For Me, But I Fight My Memories... By Ewen "Blackbird" Cluney INT. EVENT CENTER, FRONT ROW KENJI sits in the front row, along with CIVIKO, NAOKI, NOKIA, KIMIKO, SAYUKI, TOASTY, KYOSUKE, and PINKY. Kenji's expression is one of shock. KENJI Kyoko...? CHASTITY (O.S.) Is that so? INT. EVENT CENTER, RING PANTHER II is confronting CHASTITY and DREAMY in the wrestling ring. HIRO (V.O.) A dangerous situation here tonight; this newcomer looks about ready to open up a can of whup-ass on both sides of this battle! Panther II drops the mic and delivers a vicious knee to Chastity's stomach. With Chastity dazed, Panther II grabs her by the collar, slams her into the ground, and finally picks her up again and throws her clear out of the ring. Panther II then turns to face Dreamy, who is on her feet but a little shaky. PANTHER II And as for you... You're an inferior machine and I'll _destroy_ you. DREAMY What makes you so sure I'm inferior? PANTHER II I can process nearly ten times the number of polygons per second! DREAMY Then why do you only have two controller ports? PANTHER II That's all I need. I also use high density DVD-ROM media! My games have more data per disc and my graphics and sound are superior! I _will_ defeat you. INT. EVENT CENTER, ANNOUNCE TABLE JOHNNY I don't even know what they're saying, but something's about to explode! HIRO You can say that again! And now it's time for the exciting conclusion folks! PINKY Oooh! Finally! (beat) What's a conclusion? INT. EVENT CENTER, FRONT ROW Kenji slowly starts to stand up. Civiko looks up at him, concerned. CIVIKO Kenji, what's wrong? KENJI (avoiding eye contact) I have to go. CIVIKO I'll come with you. KENJI (firmly) No. CIVIKO Kenji... KENJI It's something I have to do by myself. Kenji starts walking along the row. KENJI (CONT'D) (to Kyosuke) Take care of this. He hands a CD wallet to Kyosuke. KYOSUKE Little bro... KENJI I mean it. KYOSUKE (nods) Leave it to me. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Dreamy looks back to where Kenji is leaving the event center. DREAMY (softly) Kenji? Where are you going? PANTHER II Now... let the games begin! Dreamy turns her attention to Panther II, and prepares to do battle. EXT. EVENT CENTER, PARKING LOT Kenji is running; he looks like he's trying to contain the dark emotions swirling in his brain. KENJI (V.O.) (quietly, bitterly) It had to be _her_. She just couldn't get out of my life! FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. SCHOOL HALLWAY (THE PAST) YOUNG KENJI walks out of a classroom, shouldering his schoolbag; when he turns he sees something that makes him look on in abject shock; he drops his bag as the frame tilts to one side. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. EVENT CENTER, PARKING LOT Kenji clenches his hands into fists and runs even faster. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING PANTHER II What's wrong? Did your precious boy decide to run away because he was afraid of seeing how badly I'm going to kick your sorry ass? Dreamy pauses for a moment, closing her eyes. When she opens her eyes a beat later, her eyes burn with fierce determination. DREAMY You know... You just had to toss the skanky ho-bag out of the ring. Do you know what that means? PANTHER II (amused) What? DREAMY It means that rather than that biker ho, it'll be *you*, the latest and greatest in home entertainment console and the biggest goth disco REJECT _JACKASS_ that Dreamy has EVER laid eyes on who will get Dreamy's finely polished boot shoved straight up her CANDY ASS! Dreamy wished upon her star, and your worst nightmare is going to come true tonight, LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW! IF YOU SMEEEE-- PANTHER II Please, shut the HELL UP. Dreamy stops short, giving Panther a "you better not have done what I think you did" kind of glare. DREAMY You didn't say that. TELL ME you did NOT just say that! PANTHER II And if I did? DREAMY If you did... then it looks like you just earned the rare and distinct privilege of being SUCH a PHENOMENAL jackass as to merit having your candy ass be visited by not one, but TWO of Dreamy's polished boots! Dreamy drops her microphone and runs at Panther II with a clothesline; Panther ducks, but Dreamy rebounds off the ropes and comes at Panther with an elbow to the back. With Panther II on the ground, Dreamy starts stomping on her back. EXT. STREET Kenji is still running down a street. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. SCHOOL HALLWAY (THE PAST) Young Kenji is staring fixedly ahead in shock, his schoolbag on the ground next to him. He's hyperventilating. A tall GUY (tall enough that his eyes are out of the frame) in the same school uniform walks by him, stops short, and pats him on the shoulder. GUY You mean you didn't know? Think about who you're dealing with. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. STREET KENJI (to himself) It was OVER. INT. EVENT CENTER, ANNOUNCE TABLE HIRO Can you believe this?! This newcomer sent Chastity out of the ring and out of the whole arena with her tail between her legs, but now Dreamy's just kicking her behind into the mat! JOHNNY I don't know what's going on, but--! PINKY Neither do I! ^_^ JOHNNY B-but... This new girl sure is taking a lot of punishment! INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Panther II stands in the middle of the ring, looking dazed. Dreamy grins, then dashes in, does a handstand, grabs Panther II's head with her legs and flips her opponent over. She follows this up by doing a backflip that lands her belly-down on top of Panther II. HIRO (V.O.) Nightmare Flip! Nightmare Flip! Whoever this is, she's in trouble now! Dreamy is about to go for the pin when Panther II suddenly stands up, glowing red. DREAMY What the...? PANTHER II Your first mistake was trying to fight me. Your second mistake was assuming that I was running a wrestling game. Dreamy blinks, realization dawning. She turns to look into the stands, and sees Kyosuke there, holding the CD wallet. DREAMY Kyosuke! I need--! Panther II flashes blue for a moment, then dashes forward. She delivers a powerful punch to Dreamy's back with her left hand, and follows up with a massive jumping uppercut with her right hand that carries Panther II several feet up in the air and sends Dreamy flying clear out of the ring. EXT. STREET Kenji continues running. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. SCHOOL HALLWAY (THE PAST) Young Kenji confonts a GIRL who's offscreen. YOUNG KENJI Why?! GIRL I... I don't know. One thing led to another, and... and... YOUNG KENJI Did I do something wrong? Am I not good enough for some reason? GIRL No! No... but... I'm sorry. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. STREET Kenji looks up and sees he's coming up on a particular house. INT. EVENT CENTER, FRONT ROW Dreamy is crumpled against the barrier wall; Kyosuke hops over the barrier, opens the CD wallet, and pulls out a disc. He opens her CD tray and swaps discs. Dreamy slowly opens her eyes. KYOSUKE (quietly) I saw a shinai under the ring. Dreamy slowly stands up and nods. Panther II is coming towards her; Dreamy jumps to the side just as Panther II sails at her with a powerful kick that misses and shakes the barrier wall. Dreamy slides alongside the ring and reaches under the ring apron; her hand finds purchase on a handle, and when she stands up, she is holding a shinai in an iaido stance. DREAMY I challenge you to a duel. PANTHER II (grins) In that case... you'll DIE! Panther II raises both fists into the air for a moment -- flashing blue as she does so -- and rockets through the air with one outstretched fist glowing with crimson energy. In slow motion, Dreamy drops to a crouch. Panther II's punch goes over Dreamy's head as Dreamy does a 360 turn, rising from her crouch to strike Panther II's back with the shinai. Panther II is still reeling as Dreamy follows up with a series of seven very precise strikes. JOHNNY (V.O.) Oh my god! This's become a kendo match all of a sudden! Did you SEE that?! PINKY (V.O.) See what? HIRO (V.O.) That has to be one of the most amazing counters I have ever seen! Panther II slumps to the ground. A cheer rises up from the crowd as Dreamy motions as though "sheathing" the shinai. DREAMY You have lost. Accept it. EXT. STREET - IN FRONT OF HOUSE - NIGHT Kenji is walking towards the doorstep of a house. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. STREET - IN FRONT OF HOUSE - DAY (THE PAST) Young Kenji stands on the threshold and the door is open. GIRL (O.S.) (happily) Come on in, Kenji-kun. FLASH-CUT TO: EXT. STREET - IN FRONT OF HOUSE - NIGHT Kenji holds his hand up in front of the doorbell and hesitates. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Panther II picks herself up, and swaps game discs. PANTHER II So that's how you want it? Fine then! Dreamy finds Kyosuke handing her a disc. DREAMY What's this? KYOSUKE Didn't you see? She loaded Karyu Densetsu: Dream Match 2002. DREAMY How can I get any advantage running the same game? KYOSUKE (grin) Trust me. EXT. STREET - IN FRONT OF HOUSE Kenji is about to press the doorbell when the door opens and a MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN stands there, regarding him with annoyance. WOMAN What d'you want? KENJI Is Kyoko here? WOMAN Who? KENJI (sigh) Kyoko Kitagami. She lives here. Or used to. WOMAN Used to. The Kitagami family sold us this house two months ago. Bad enough we keep getting their mail... now we have a boy after their daughter too! KENJI (annoyed) Do you know where they moved to? WOMAN No! And even if I did, I wouldn't tell the likes of you! Kenji gives her a flat stare for a moment, then bows briefly. KENJI Sorry to have disturbed you. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Panther II grips a pair of kunai daggers, and Dreamy has taken up a stance that has her balancing on one foot, with the other leg ready to kick. Both are breathing very heavily. Suddenly they both stop. PANTHER II Heh. I win. By time-out. DREAMY Continue. Panther II grins, her eyes glowing red for a moment -- only to find Dreamy is bearing down on her! DREAMY (CONT'D) The round already started! Dreamy brings a wicked kick down on Panther II, and follows up with a lightning-fast flurry of punches. INT. EVENT CENTER, FRONT ROW KIMIKO (to Kyosuke) Do you really know what you're doing? KYOSUKE Can't you see it? There is a loud crashing sound. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Panther II is panting for breath. PANTHER II How?! DREAMY You're burned. Dreamy launches herself at her opponent yet again. INT. EVENT CENTER, FRONT ROW KIMIKO See what? KYOSUKE That game was originally released for DreamStation-X. The Panther^2 has less video memory and the port was poorly done -- and has longer loading times. KIMIKO So... You mean every time they have to load data from the CD Dreamy will start acting first? KYOSUKE (nods) At this rate, her victory is assured. EXT. STREET Kenji dejectedly walks down the street at a sedate pace. He pauses, closes his eyes, and takes a deep breath while clenching his fists. KENJI Tomorrow. That's when I'll get my answers. INT. EVENT CENTER, RING Dreamy is glowing red and cracking her knuckles. The expression on her face is utterly compassionless. HIRO (V.O.) This could be it! Dreamy is just taking it to this new girl! DREAMY This next round... will be your last! As though on cue, Dreamy slaps her left fist into her right palm, then steps forward, turning in a circle and clenching her right hand into a fist as she does so, and delivers a punch to Panther II's midsection, so powerful that Panther II is thrown against the ring post and slumps down there. Panther II's drive door is cracked. There is a long pause. Dreamy opens her CD tray, pulls the disc out, and slumps down on the ground, leaning against the barrier wall. FADE TO BLACK. INT. KENJI'S ROOM - EARLY MORNING Kenji finishes buttoning up the jacket of his old school uniform (the classic navy blue Japanese style). He picks up a school bag and quietly leaves the room. EXT. IN FRONT OF KENJI'S HOUSE Kenji stands next to his bicycle. He ceremoniously gets onto the bicycle, then stops short. He looks at the tires -- which are low on air -- then scowls and rolls his eyes. WIPE RIGHT TO: EXT. IN FRONT OF KENJI'S HOUSE Kenji finishes inflating the tires with his bicycle pump, then reattaches the pump in its place on the frame of the bike. He climbs on the bike again, and nods when he sees that the tires are fine. He starts pedalling, and before long picks up some speed. EXT. STREET Kenji (still on his bike) comes to a hill. He pauses for a moment, then starts downhill, pedalling as fast as he can. The wind whips at his hair, and still he presses on, smiling just slightly. He takes a sharp turn at the bottom of the hill, and passes by a few other STUDENTS riding bicycles. STUDENT #1 Am... Am I imagining things or was that who I thought it was? STUDENT #2 I saw it too... RITSUKO, a tall girl with long hair in a ponytail, comes up alongside Students 1 and 2 on her own bicycle. RITSUKO Who did you see? STUDENT #1 It was... A-Asakawa. EXT. STREET Kenji keeps pedalling. When he glances back, he sees several students on bikes pursuing him, and starting to catch up. KENJI (muttering to himself) The bike goons are out in force, of course. Student #3 manages to catch up with Kenji. STUDENT #3 You got a lotta nerve showing your face around here! KENJI I have some business to take care of today. Leave me alone. STUDENT #3 I can't. Ristuko-sama wants you taken down! Kenji sighs and pulls out his bicycle pump. STUDENT #3 (CONT'D) And what're you going to do with that? Hit me over the head? KENJI I don't have to. Kenji jerks the pump so the pumping handle (which has a short L-shaped end) is extended. He then reaches over and uses the end of the handle to pull at the chain on Student #3's bike. The chain slips off the main gear, and #3 immediately starts to slow down, his pedalling suddenly becoming totally useless. Kenji ignores this, however, and presses on faster, only to find Ritsuko is catching up with him. KENJI (CONT'D) If it isn't the ringleader of the bicycle bozos. RITSUKO Why are you back?! KENJI That's my business. Not yours. RITSUKO I'm making it my business! Kenji twirls the bicycle pump in his hand. Ritsuko moves away from him as they ride. RITSUKO (CONT'D) Don't think that trick would work on me! KENJI (shrugs) That's okay; I have a other tricks. Ritsuko looks at him questioningly as he hefts the bicycle pump. Suddenly, he tosses it at her front wheel; it catches in the spokes. Ritsuko looks at it in horror for a very brief moment. CLOSE-UP PROFILE OF KENJI as he rides along with a painful crashing sound in the background. INT. KENJI'S HOUSE, KITCHEN Kimiko picks up the ringing phone. KIMIKO Hello? (beat) Hm? I don't know! (2 beats) Look, he left home before anyone else here woke up. (2 beats) He took his bicycle -- the one he used to ride to school all the time. That's all I know. Kimiko hangs up the phone and turns to see Civiko watching from across the room, looking concerned CIVIKO He... left? KIMIKO (nods) No one seems to know where he went. CIVIKO (sigh) What's so special about his bicycle? KIMIKO In high school he used to ride it _everywhere_. He'd say he liked it... better than driving. CIVIKO But where...? KIMIKO (sigh) Only one place. (beat) Sakurai High. EXT. IN FRONT OF SAKURAI HIGH Kenji stands before the gate to the school with his bike next to him. He looks like he should blend in perfectly, but a lot of students are stopping to gawk at him. INT. EXTREME CD VISION Naoki is standing behind the counter, looking annoyed. MIMI regards him expectantly. MIMI Well? NAOKI (sigh) His sister said he took off on his bike before anyone else woke up. MIMI He... has a bike? NAOKI (rolls eyes) Dude, in high school he used to ride that thing to and from school every day without fail. He's about the only guy I know whose parents *forced* him to learn to drive. MIMI Where's the school? NAOKI Huh? MIMI Tell me! NAOKI Uh... Okay... No prob. INT. CITY BUS Civiko sits uncomfortably in a seat near the front of the bus. EXT. STREET Mimi runs as quickly as she can manage. EXT. SAKURAI HIGH, HALLWAY Kenji walks through a throng of students that always seems to part around him as he moves. Suddenly his way is blocked by JURIKO and MASAHIRO; a girl and boy who look almost identical except that Juriko's blue hair is shoulder-length and Masahiro's is cut short. Both wear a boys' school uniform, but in white, with gold epaulets. As Kenji stares at them and they stare at him, the crowd backs away. JURIKO Incredible that you'd show your face around here again. KENJI Believe me, I'd rather not be here, much less deal with student council clowns like you. MASAHIRO Good, because this is a closed campus, and as you are no longer a student... Kenji rolls his eyes, reaches into his jacket, and pulls out a slip of paper. He holds out the slip so Juriko and Masahiro can see. JURIKO What's this? KENJI A pass. MASAHIRO Where did _you_ get _that_? KENJI I assume you know how to read? Juriko reaches to take the pass but Kenji pulls his hand back. Juriko scowls and looks at the pass again. JURIKO Tanaka-sensei?! KENJI I *do* still have some friends here. MASAHIRO To think that one of the most respected teachers in the school would be willing to help *you*... KENJI (rolls eyes) He's respected because he actually treats people with respect. Now, if you'll excuse me... Kenji pushes past them, and murmurs start to rise up from the crowd of students. Juriko and Masahiro exchange glances. JURIKO (to Masahiro) Don't worry; even with a pass he won't get far. EXT. SAKURAI HIGH, PLAZA Kenji is walking across a broad cement-paved plaza in the middle of the school. It is quiet and the place seems deserted. The lines in the cement make a large circle, and Kenji begins walking around its circumference. KENJI Pretty stupid of me to think that it'd all be over just like that. (3 beats) Circles. Always circles. No beginning or end, and no way to tell forwards from backwards. As Kenji comes to where he started, he finds himself face to face with HANAKO, a tall girl with short blonde hair and an inking pen behind one ear. HANAKO Kenji Asakawa. Back at Sakurai High. KENJI (sarcastic) Hanako Fujiwara. Cutting class, apparently. HANAKO Why on earth did you come back? KENJI I have some business to take care of. After that I'll leave, and believe me I don't plan to come back again. HANAKO Do you *really* think it's going to be that simple? KENJI (sigh) No. I know better than to hope for sanity in a place like this. Hanako snaps her fingers and several MANGA CLUB MEMBERS pop out from behind columns and bushes. HANAKO Then the next question is, are you going to surrender quietly, or do we get to have some fun first? Kenji opens his bag and reaches inside. The manga club members halt their advance apprehensively. In one motion Kenji pulls out a UFO catcher doll of a girl with pink hair and bunny ears wearing overalls, and hurls it. Most of the club members' eyes pop out when they see it. MANGA CLUB MEMBER #1 That's the limited edition UFO catcher doll of Kurumi! KAWAII~~! There's a sudden mad dash for the doll. Hanako looks on in disbelief as Kenji smirks at her for a moment and then runs away. EXT. IN FRONT OF SAKURAI HIGH Civiko stands in front of the school with trepidation. Mimi runs up and leans against the gate, panting. CIVIKO Wh... What're you doing here?! MIMI I might ask... (pant) you the same... (pant) question! CIVIKO (frowns) We're both looking for Kenji. Let's go. MIMI You gotta be kidding! I-- Civiko grabs hold of Mimi's braid and starts walking, pulling Mimi along. EXT. SAKURAI HIGH, ANOTHER HALLWAY Kenji walks along warily. Suddenly there is a heavy, metallic sound behind him. Then another. Kenji slowly turns around to see ICHIRO, a tall, skinny guy with short black hair and a lab coat over his uniform, piloting a large power suit. KENJI You've got to be kidding. ICHIRO The science fiction club will have it's revenge on you, Kenji Asakawa! From behind Ichiro, several other SCIENCE FICTION CLUB MEMBERS assemble. Some wear high-tech looking armor, and many have strange rayguns and other devices. Kenji faces off with the horde for a long moment, then suddenly looks past them and points. KENJI Holy shit! What's that?! As they're distracted, Kenji bolts. He glances behind him and finds that the distraction didn't last long and they're in hot pursuit. He presses on, but finds that the manga club is coming at him from up ahead. He takes a left turn down another hallway, and both groups continue after him. INT. CLASSROOM AYAKO sits in class. Someone hands her a note; she opens it and finds the words "Kenji Asakawa is here. All Black Magic club members report to the club room immediately." Ayako frowns and stands up. TEACHER Ayako, is there a problem? AYAKO I'm going to leave for a little while. TEACHER You mean you'd *like* to leave for a little while? Ayako's eyes suddenly glow red and lightning crackles overhead. AYAKO Apparently you didn't hear me. EXT. SAKURAI HIGH, HALLWAY Civiko and Mimi walk together, in silence. Sounds of commotion can be heard in the distance. EXT. SAKURAI HIGH, YET ANOTHER HALLWAY Kenji continues running; the Black Magic Club has joined in the chase, and Kenji finds himself dodging a hail of pens, lightning bolts, fireballs, missiles, and laser blasts as he runs. Ichiro suddenly laughs manaically. HANAKO What's so funny?! ICHIRO He's running straight towards the SuperDimensional landmines we set up! Kenji blinks and looks ahead; he sees several metal discs on the ground. He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small black ball. As he comes to the discs he leaps over them and throws the ball at the ground. A huge cloud of smoke explodes outward as he sails over the mines and through the door to an interior hallway. INT. HALLWAY Kenji is still running, but then skids to a halt. The camera zooms in on KYOKO as she leans up against a wall, looking at Kenji in shock. Both of them ignore the explosions in the background. KYOKO (disbelief) K-Kenji? Kenji's expression becomes determined and sour. He walks up to Kyoko and slams both of his palms against the wall behind her, trapping her in place. Kyoko looks up at him with a mixture of terror and fearful hope on her features. PROFILE SHOT of Kenji standing over Kyoko. Civiko and Mimi turn a corner and stop short, looking on in shock. Mimi takes a few steps closer -- until she realizes that Kyoko is reaching up, putting her hands around Kenji's head, and drawing him closer. CLOSE-UP of Kyoko's smiling yet tearful face as she purses her lips for a kiss. CLOSE-UP of Kenji; his eyes are closed and he feels himself being drawn closer. MEDIUM SHOT of Kyoko about to kiss him. CLOSE-UP of Kenji suddenly opening his eyes. He roughtly pushes Kyoko away, shoving her into the wall. As he glances to one side he sees Civiko and Mimi there and he starts very slowly walking towards them. Kyoko begins to cry in earnest. EXTRME CLOSE-UP of Ayako watching in horror from around the corner. PROFILE SHOT of Kenji as he approaches Mimi. She looks hopeful, scared, and happy, until he continues past her, whereupon she starts to cry. CLOSE-UP of Civiko as she watches him approach her. MEDIUM SHOT of Kenji putting his arms around Civiko and kissing her. 4 beats. Kenji slowly loosens his grip on Civiko. CLOSE-UP of Ayako. AYAKO (V.O.) (enraged) He... made my sempai cry! Now he's going to PAY! LONG SHOT of Kenji, Civiko, Mimi, and Kyoko. MIMI Why? KENJI (beat) Why what? Mimi takes a deep breath and tries to prepare herself. MIMI (pointing at Civiko) Why HER?! As Mimi continues to speak, Civiko gradually becomes more and more angry, unnoticed by Kenji. MIMI (CONT'D) She's not even human! She's your fucking _car_! Are you really that much of a coward that you'd just take the easy way out and pick the one who you think is least likely to hurt you?! You're just... just... _patheti_--! In slow motion, Civiko's open hand swings. Everyone looks on in shock as Civiko slaps Mimi in the face so hard that Mimi's glasses clatter to the floor (with one lens becoming cracked), she's staggered back against a wall, and her cheek bears a dark red mark. Mimi holds her cheek numbly. Kenji, who was about to speak, looks on in surprise as Civiko angrily addresses Mimi. CIVIKO Don't... don't _trivialize_ me! Whatever I started out as, I'm _human_ now! I'm *not* Kenji's toy, *or* anyone else's! This isn't about whether *you* won or lost! Kenji and I love each other! Civiko pauses to catch her breath, and Mimi slowly sinks to the floor. Kenji puts his arms around Civiko from behind, and the tension seems to drain away from her. Kyoko, meanwhile, has recovered somewhat. KYOKO Then... why did you come here today? KENJI (sigh) Someone's been using magic to make trouble for me -- on your behalf. KYOKO What? All of them are alerted by the sound of running footsteps in the distance. A small figure with a flaring black cloak can be seen retreating into the distance. KYOKO (CONT'D) (sadly) Ayako... Kenji pauses for a moment, then realization dawns. FLASH-CUT TO: INT. DEPARTMENT STORE Kenji and Ayako each hold opposite sleeves of a leather jacket while everyone looks on. AYAKO That's 'cuz I wanna give it to my sempai! She's smart and pretty and wonderful and always helps me out and I wanna do something nice for her but he won't let me!!! Ayako starts crying fountain-tears. FLASH-CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY KENJI Ayako?!
